Between the Lines

Café Rebrand & Experiential Identity Development

A warm literary café rebrand designed to transform a quiet coffee shop into a community-centered destination for reading, gathering, working, studying, and lingering throughout the day.

The Challenge

Between the Lines Café was originally established as “The Morning Room,” a small independent coffee house centered around slow mornings and quiet atmosphere. Over time, however, the business began struggling with customer retention, unclear positioning, and a lack of cohesion between its offerings and identity.

The original name unintentionally limited public perception of the café, creating associations that felt restrictive, outdated, or emotionally disconnected from the warm and welcoming experience the owners wanted customers to have within the space.

At the same time, the business had quietly developed two strong opportunities for expansion: a small in-house library system and an increasingly popular bakery offering. Neither system was fully integrated into the customer experience or visual identity, resulting in missed opportunities for stronger community engagement and repeat visits.

The client wanted to reposition the café as a warm, community-centered environment that encouraged people to gather, read, work, study, and remain in the space throughout the day rather than simply stop in for coffee and leave.

The Problem

The client arrived with several conflicting goals throughout the discovery phase.

They wanted the café to feel cozy and intimate without becoming visually outdated or emotionally heavy. At the same time, they wanted to modernize the business without losing the warmth and familiarity that made independent cafés feel personal and inviting.

The business had also developed several disconnected systems over time. The library feature lacked visibility and structure, making many customers unaware it existed at all, while the bakery offerings had begun attracting attention but felt visually disconnected from the larger brand experience.

There was a lack of cohesion between the café's atmosphere, identity, and long-term direction, leaving the business without a strong emotional anchor or recognizable personality system.

The Strategy

The first step was repositioning the business from “local coffee shop” to “community-centered café experience.” The focus shifted toward comfort, conversation, creativity, reading, and lingering presence rather than quick transactions.

The second step was addressing the limitations of the original brand name and developing a new identity direction that felt warmer, more expansive, and more socially inviting. “Between the Lines Café” was developed to connect the literary atmosphere, conversational energy, and layered customer experience into a single cohesive concept.

The third step was unifying the café, bakery, and library systems into one intentional experience. Rather than treating these elements as secondary additions, the redesign positioned them as central parts of the customer journey.

Through this process, I identified the need for an immersive visual system that encouraged customers to emotionally connect with the space and view the café as a destination rather than a transactional stop.

The Solution

I developed a complete rebrand centered around warmth, familiarity, and community interaction.

The visual identity was redesigned to support both daytime café traffic and longer evening visits focused on reading, conversation, and bakery offerings.

I restructured the customer-facing library system to improve visibility, accessibility, and participation while integrating it naturally into the larger café experience.

I also developed a cohesive environmental branding direction that connected signage, menus, packaging, interiors, merchandise, and digital touchpoints into a unified atmosphere.

During the process, the identity system was intentionally expanded beyond coffee-focused branding so the business could continue growing its bakery offerings, events, and community presence without feeling visually disconnected.

Brand Applications

The Between the Lines identity system was applied across a full café experience, including signage, coffee and bakery packaging, library checkout materials, loyalty cards, website direction, menu design, social media branding, employee aprons, interior moodboards, and event graphics.

Each application was designed to support the larger goal of turning the café into a cohesive, recognizable, and emotionally inviting destination.

The Outcome

Between the Lines Café now has a cohesive and emotionally engaging identity that transforms the business from a struggling coffee shop into a warm, community-oriented destination.

The redesigned experience supports longer customer visits, stronger emotional connection, and broader all-day traffic across both physical and digital touchpoints.

The café is now positioned for future growth through expanded bakery offerings, community events, and continued development of its literary café experience.
